Sand tray therapy allows a person to construct scenes about their life in a symbolic way that may feel less threatening than trying to find words to express thoughts and feelings. This non-verbal method of therapy can be used with children, teens, adults, couples, families, and groups.

When children, teens or adults are unable to vocalize their emotional state, often times because of past trauma, the sand is instantly soothing, and the miniatures can be used to create various scenes without the pressure of having to talk about the trauma or troubling issue. The client can create various scenarios that actually represent themselves. The therapist works with the client as they together interpret the miniature objects as representations of real people and events.

Gaining insight and facilitating change on a symbolic level can help a client gain courage to make changes in their own life.
